Evocative and brimming with redemption, Mary Akers' newest collection BONES OF AN INLAND SEA takes the reader on a journey of exploration and transformation that begins with a 19th century shipwreck, passes through Bikini Atoll's atomic testing, sinks into the heart of a devastating tsunami, and slides forward into a futurist island utopia floating in the Sargasso Sea. Characters connect on remote beaches and forgotten islands, while family ties prove--like the ocean--to be both powerful and unpredictable. These fourteen stories form a captivating mosaic of intertwining narratives that convey a strong sense of the eternal and the possible.

Having grown up on a tropical island in Asia, a beach rat and surf bum from an early age, around boats and the ocean, I savored Mary Aker's Bones of an Island Sea. The ocean is the constant backdrop to these connected short stories, which I took like fine chocolates, treating myself one by one. The strength of the stories isn't the setting. though, but the characters in the setting, unique individuals with unique voices and intriguing circumstances that grab you like a squid jig. One sentence in, and you can't get loose. Having been an eyewitness to the 2004 Asian tsunami, "Christmas in Phuket" was a fascinating read. But the stellar standout story to me was "Viewing Medusa". This story, in fact, highlights the unavoidable weakness of short story collections, as there is bound to be one character you want a hell of lot more of. I found myself wishing that Josie, the fascinating and ultimately deadly marine biologist who describes herself as a "mass of contradictions" could have a whole novel to herself.I highly recommend this book, and in fact have recommended it for friends going on fishing and surfing charters here in Indonesia where I live.

Bones of an Inland Sea Mary Akers 9781935708896 Books Reviews
Mary Akers has written an outstanding story collection that ranges widely in character, time, and place. What these tales share in common, besides the excellent writing from sentence to sentence, is a familial connection the book chronicles the surprisingly convergent histories of two families. The earliest story takes place in 1886; the latest in 2040. Plenty happens within this time frame--from shipwrecks to tsunamis; and the cast of characters is as diverse as the changing times Akers explores a sea captain's widow, a treasure-hunter, a transgendered archeologist, a murderous marine biologist, and so many more. Akers offers a tour de force of variety, which is to say that you will certainly find a character or two who wins your heart, as well as one or more who will stun, if not appall, you. I should mention one other unifying element water. Akers is a marine biologist whose love of the deep blue is on display in nearly every story. Virtually every one of her characters lives in or near the water, where they work or play or ponder its mysteries. You will be hard-pressed to find a writer who does more or better with the sea. Need I say it? You should buy this book!
Very difficult for to me to make connection of the stories
This is a beautiful collection of stories filled with fully human, quirky characters who explore land and sea and themselves. Mary Akers navigates this terrain fearlessly, delivering a collection of stories that resonated deeply with me. Definitely a keeper -- a book I know I will read again and again.
This is a collection of short stories with an interlocking thread of family connections and coastal themes. Akers' beautiful prose evokes the sights and smells of the sea as well as the passions and loves of a diverse collection of fascinating characters. A literary beach read, or for any time you want to be transported to a place close to the ocean.
Absolutely lovely collection about our connections to nature and to each other and the effects of time and change. I especially loved how some of the characters were linked to each other. I will remember this one for a long time!
An extremely, carefully well-crafted collection of linked stories in which the sea is a pretense to explore the secret lives of characters. The excellent title refers to what in fact is the main theme of the collection what time does to our lives and how we change. As Salim, the Egyptian host, says in the story "What Lies Beneath""Only three things in a life are certain birth, death and change."
This collection also offers the occasion to reflect on how linking the stories not through the plot--in which case we would probably have a novel--but by some interconnection among the characters adds to a more efficient and complex reading. At times, and until I got used to the concept that characters were somehow related to one another--sometimes by family links--I startled, as though I'd missed patches of a hidden novel.
This collection of stories by Mary Akers is a marvelous deep sea adventure in philosophical brilliance. Her style of writing wonderfully uses words and images to immerse the reader in an objective world that vividly paints the scene in the imagination, especially being underwater when an unexpected tsunami passes above. And yet she balances that with subjective pondering that delves deep into the human thoughts and feelings of her characters. What we get are 14 stories that appear to be independent tales but soon reveal a complex network that explores the philosophical meanings of life, death, love and eternity. Employing her knowledge of marine ecology, Akers draws parallels between the human kingdom and the animal kingdom and invites deliberation on contemporary ethical issues. These stories sow seeds in the garden of the mind and beg the reader to further explore them through dialogue and discussion. She writes in the book, "I believe other people's stories can help us understand ourselves" [page 138] and that is exactly what these invite us to do. Well thought out, exquisitely written, this is a book that you will want to read a second time to piece together all the parts of the puzzle that we call Life.
